The Presidents

For John, BLUFIn the old days we broke up winter with holidays fixed in date and flowing in day.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Happy Presidents Day.  I am old enough to remember when we had two holidays this month, one for Washington and one for Lincoln.  I am not sure this is an improvement.

In a way, one wonders if the consolidation is not also part of the "feel good" idea that everyone is a winner, rather than a focus on our two greatest Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

IMHO, it is a progressive form of nullification. And "yes" its all part of the everyone is equal and a winner mentality. This worldview, BTW, is not the same as "everyone has a value."

Washington and Lincoln led the nation in two distinctly different and seminal periods of the nation's history. As such, each should be separately acclaimed for his greatness. But then the whiners will cry crocodile tears over McKinley, Taft, Hoover, et al being "excluded."

To combine the celebration of those who achieve singular greatness and importance in the furtherance of the American ideal is the kissing cousin of combining or eliminating other holidays so every religion is recognized .....or...not recognized at all. One wonders what is the future given today's environment of Mother's Day and Father's Day. Surrogate Day?? Partner's Day?? Turkey Baster Day?

And then we have the conundrum over those bothersome Christian holidays now that American society has become "enlightened." Perhaps there will be a move afoot in the Congress to combine them into a single "Christian Holiday for Those Who Believe In Myths." That should satisfy the atheists, the agnostics, the Muslims....and the Science folks.

After all......as H2 arrogantly questioned....."What difference does it make??" Nobody knows anything about the reason for the holiday anyway. It's just a convenient day off from work. Right??
