Winston as Soldier (and Sailor and Airman)

There is a new biography out on Winston Churchill, Warlord:  A Life of Winston Churchill at War 1874-1945. The author is Carlo D'Este, who has authored several military history books, including one I moved from one bookshelf to another today, Decision at Normandy. (The publisher is HarperCollins Publishers and the cost is a hefty $39.95.) The book is long, at 864 pages. Someone commented in an EMail that he had read it, but skipped the first 256 pages of fine print and made straight for the World War II section.

Here is a review of the new Carlo D'Este book on Winston Churchill, as soldier. The reviewer is Colonel Cole C Kingseed, USA Ret., Ph.D., a former professor of history at the U.S. Military Academy,

Here is an interview with the author, Carlo D'Este. I understand it can be downloaded to an iPod, although I have not demonstrated that to myself. The interview is some 82 minutes and pocket change.

Winston Churchill had been First Lord of the Admiralty at the beginning of World War One, up until the disaster at Galipoli. It may be apocryphal, but the story is that at the beginning of World War II, when Winston Churchill was brought into the Government, again as First Lord of the Admiralty, the Board of the Admiralty (their Lordships) immediately signaled the Fleet:  "Winston is back."

This tome is now on my list of books to read.
